A game of Global conquest...

We are running a large wargame this week with 30 odd players and a team of Umpires.

Our fictional world has 3 major powers (Blue, Red and Grey), each allied to 3 minor powers (Purple, Green and Yellow respectively) who between them control the only canal between continents, plus some non State Actors (Orange).  The world is set up as shown below with two large oceans (in white):
Each country is run with a team of players including a President, Diplomat, Treasurer and Military Commanders.. There are a range of game moderators who also run the UN and World Bank.  Each turn includes economic & trade, diplomacy, industry and of course military action in a pretty rapid fire sequence:

10 mins of team strategising
10 mins of interaction between teams
20 mins for moderated game moves (in a separate room, only Commanders allowed)
10 min for combat resolution

We will running 8 turns over 2 half day sessions later this week, after which Victory will be calculated as follows:
And finally, each turn a country gets to generate military assets by expending resources, each of which has special capabilities:

As you can see, Units have Attack-Defence-Move stats like a classic SPI/AH board game, which are used to resolve combat with a few die rolls

Apparently you can't hoard up technology points to develop nuclear weapons...I know because I asked :-D

I am on the Blue team in the role of Diplomat (an unusual role for me!) and all alliances and deals must be sealed with real world beers!

Unreasonable distractions

There are very real perils in undertaking the fascinating Strategy and Policy course of study I am doing at the moment.  Each week we study a new war in depth, analysing the strategies of different sides, diplomatic and economic factors, operational conduct and so on.  Clearly this has a reading burden associated with it, but its also a burden to the gamer in that every week something shiny comes along!  One week I want to refight the Pelopennesian War between Athens and Sparta, the next week it is the French Indian Wars, then the Napoleonic era... you can see the problem!  Really quite unfair to the wargamer's typically undisciplined mind.

This week really threatened to make me crumble as we revisited the German Wars of Unification, reactivating my desire to game the FPW which I have mostly held a lid on since the early 1990s.  I almost fell off the wagon for Baccus's lovely 6mm range last year, so I just have to close my eyes and think about all the other projects I have in train or planned.  Like my 6mm ECW project.  Of course, if somebody wanted to jump in (I'm thinking of you 'Bish) I might have to change my mind yet again..

And before anyone says it: yes, its great to have such a dilemma!

Addendum: The Fall of Kagul III

Dave (who posted the original pics) has told me that the following house rules were used for the extra models (to the best of his memory).  Hope this helps resurrect some old favourites to the table!

  • Hormagaunts were Stealers you could hit on a 4+, rolled two dice in combat (vice 3) and subtracted -1 from the highest.
  • Warriors you could only hit on the sustain, they had Parry and added +2 to the highest roll.
  • Carnifex was like Warrior but need two hits to kill . It also got to add the lowest die rolled to its combat score.
  • Chaplain was a Sergeant with +2 to his combat roll and a 4+ save. (But I've seen some more elegant options to this around the net)
  • Inquisitor was all that, plus a digi weapon that killed anything before it attacked on a 6.

Space Hulk: The Fall of Kagul III

Some nice footage of Space Hulk gaming at Adepticon 2015 over the weekend, with an interesting scenario for six players.  Not sure what rules were used or who manufactured the Hulk terrain.

A huge game of Space Hulk played on a Creative Gamescape setup. Four marine players had to find an Inquisitor and get him off planet in twenty turns. Probably the closest game I ever played (see the last couple of captions) which made for a very cinematic game.

Hundred Days of Napoleon: Bicentennary

Pretty much everybody knows that this year sees the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June.  Today is the 200th Anniversary of Napoleon's return to Paris from exile on Elba and start the hundred days campaign which would culminate in his defeat at Waterloo.

Back to the 'Nam

Interesting Vietnam gaming news on two fronts this week:

First up, Flashpoint Miniatures are getting close to releasing their new Vietnam rules which is great news.  I know Jimmi there has been working hard on them and having had some long chats with him about what he wanted to do with them, I'm excited!

Secondly, Battlefront is expanding their Vietnam range later this year with some lovely Brown Water Navy goodness.  Love 'em or hate 'em, their figs are nice and spur new www eye candy! See the news release below

This will also be reinforced with me starting a University elective on the Vietnam War shortly, everything from the French facing off against the Viet Minh to the Chinese expedition in early 1979 - excellent!  I'm looking forward to delving back into my Nam gaming collection when I eventually get home!  Thanks to Steve from Sound Officer's Call for rekindling my interest with his eye candy!

I don't care about this letter's validity, its been amusing me on a and off for years (its been carbon dated to around 1994).  I thought I would share it this time around:

Dear Sir:

Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labeled "211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post. Hominid skull." We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that it represents "conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Charleston County two million years ago." Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the variety one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be the "Malibu Barbie". It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to contradiction with your findings. However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the specimen which might have tipped you off to it's modern origin:

     1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilized bone.

     2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately 9 cubic centimeters, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified proto-hominids.

     3. The dentition pattern evident on the "skull" is more
consistent with the common domesticated dog than it is with the "ravenous man-eating Pliocene clams" you speculate roamed the wetlands during that time. This latter finding is certainly one of the most intriguing hypotheses you have submitted in your history with this institution, but the evidence seems to weigh rather heavily against it. Without going into too much detail, let us say that:

          A. The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that a dog has chewed on.
          B. Clams don't have teeth.

It is with feelings tinged with melancholy that we must deny your request to have the specimen carbon dated. This is partially due to the heavy load our lab must bear in it's normal operation, and partly due to carbon dating's notorious inaccuracy in fossils of recent geologic record. To the best of our knowledge, no Barbie dolls were produced prior to 1956 AD, and carbon dating is likely to produce wildly inaccurate results. Sadly, we must also deny your request that we approach the National Science Foundation's Phylogeny Department with the concept of assigning your specimen the scientific name "Australopithecus spiff-arino." Speaking personally, I, for one, fought tenaciously for the acceptance of your proposed taxonomy, but was ultimately voted down because the species name you selected was hyphenated, and didn't really sound like it might be Latin.

However, we gladly accept your generous donation of this fascinating specimen to the museum. While it is undoubtedly not a hominid fossil, it is, nonetheless, yet another riveting example of the great body of work you seem to accumulate here so effortlessly. You should know that our Director has reserved a special shelf in his own office for the display of the specimens you have previously submitted to the Institution, and the entire staff speculates daily on what you will happen upon next in your digs at the site you have discovered in your back yard. We eagerly anticipate your trip to our nation's capital that you proposed in your last letter, and several of us are pressing the Director to pay for it. We are particularly interested in hearing you expand on your theories surrounding the "trans-positating fillifitation of ferrous ions in a structural matrix" that makes the excellent juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex femur you recently discovered take on the deceptive appearance of a rusty 9-mm Sears Craftsman automotive crescent wrench.

WSS 77 & Battlegroup in the Desert

Amongst its other fine offerings, the latest issue of WSS 77 includes an article with Warwick Kinrade, the author of the Battlegroup rules series.  In his piece, he discusses taking the rules to North Afrika and how he intends to adapt the existing rules to that environment.

I'm not going to drop any spoilers here, other than the interesting news that the Western Desert will probably see two volumes.  This will allow rules and army lists to more accurately represent the opening years in the desert, and the later fierce fighting in Tunisia.  The same approach was taken for other theatres too and works very well.

If you are a BG fan, this is an article well worth reading.

A weekend in Washington DC

Yes, he is!
The family went down to Washington DC last weekend for official purposes, but we got to enjoy a day on the Mall and visiting some of the excellent Smithsonian Museums (Air and Space, and the History of US), as well as the International Spy Museum which was a lot of fun.  We'll be back in DC for a week in April and look forward to seeing more then!

Painting Ostfront Germans

Friend of Warlord and grand master of the Volley Fire Painting Services paint mines, Andy Singleton has written a fantastic guide for new German players – a guide on how to paint three of the key uniforms worn by German troops on the Eastern Front.
Handily, Andy has included the specific paints used – and their equivalents from the Vallejo and Citadel paint ranges – as well as some pictures of his own collection of German equipment for reference!

One of the most potentially daunting and baffling forces to paint for WW2 gaming is the Germans. Due to the way the German military was formed, each branch was, in essence, competing against the other for resources and to get the best equipment, which led to a bewildering array of uniforms becoming present in a very short period of time! To help bring some clarity for those unfamiliar with German uniforms I’m going to explain the styles and who wore what.


This colour sounds simple, but even the name is misleading as Field Grey is actually green…! Throughout the war the colour changed quite considerably and had very little consistency, especially after around 1942, but even prior to that the colour could vary massively. To illustrate this I’ve included a pic of two of my  reproduction caps. The bottom hat was brand new when I took the photo, and the other I’ve had for ages and has faded, been rained on (lots) and generally had lots of dirt and dust build up in it – so you don’t need to sweat getting the colour right too much. I prefer Russian Uniform as a base colour, with army painter Strong tone for shading, and Green Grey for highlights, with increasing amounts of white mixed in to create starker contrasts. If you only have access to Games Workshop paints then I’d suggest using Straken Green or Nurgling Green for the base colour, giving the model a wash of Agrax Earthshade, and then layering on highlights using increasing amounts of white paint mixed into the base colour.

Field Grey uniforms were worn by all Heer and Waffen-SS forces, as well as by the Fallschirmjäger as trousers, though the Waffen SS and Fallschirmjager also usually wore them in conjunction with camouflage smocks, which I’ll come to later.


This is the camouflage used by the army (Heer) and Airforce (Fallschirmjäger and Luftwaffe Field Divisions). Splinter Pattern Camouflage is used for Army infantry wearing hooded parka jackets, smocks, and the triangular Zeltbahn Poncho, which can be seen in the new Veteran Grenadiers set. Although regularly used as a poncho by soldiers its original guise is as a quarter of a tent as can be seen below. Splinter pattern would also be worn on trousers, however these were purchased privately by the soldiers and were quite rare to see. Winter over-trousers were also made, but these tended to only be worn in the winter as they are heavy and hot. As you can see below there is a slight difference in patterns and colour, as with the field grey:

To paint Splinter Pattern, I use Vallejo Khaki as the base colour, then shade this with Army Painter Strongtone, then highlight the smock using increasing amounts of white, before finishing the camouflage pattern with reflective Green and Flat Earth disruptive patterns. If I were to use Games Workshop colours I would use Ushabti Bone, Loren Forest for the green and Skrag Brown for the brown.
Fallschirmjager Splinter


Waffen-SS camouflage is a very extensive subject, so I shall concentrate on one of the most common patterns seen on the Eastern Front:
Oakleaf Camouflage. This was the most common camouflage pattern, and came in the form of smocks, parkas and helmet covers. These were all reversible, the smocks and helmet covers had autumn browns on one side, and summer greens on the reverse. A little further down the page you’ll find a picture of my parka which shows the autumn brown side. Parkas could be reversed to white for wearing in the snow, however this side tended to absorb far more water than the camouflage side and attract lots of dirt, so wearing the camouflage side even in the snow wasn’t uncommon!
Waffen SS SummerTo paint the pattern I use Vallejo Brown Sand as a base colour, shade and highlight this as with the other items of clothing, and then apply the camouflage using large dots to small dots. For summer camouflage I start off with Vallejo Extra Dark Green, then on top of this apply dots of reflective green, and finally finish the pattern off with tiny dots of Golden Olive. With Games Workshop Paints I would use Balor Brown for the base, then Loren Forest, Straken Green, and Moot Green for the decreasingly sized dots.

For the autumn side I use the same technique, but start with Brown Sand, then dots of Hull Red, Flat Earth and Orange Leather. In Games Workhop colours I’d use Balor Brown as the base again, then Doombull Brown, Skrag Brown and finally Tau Light Ochre.


German straps and boots were black leather and the field gear varied greatly in colour again. I tend to use either Vallejo Middlestone or Reflective Green with some Army painter Strong Tone over the top, although there’s a lot of choice here, and you can pretty much use a fairly huge range of colours depending when and where your figures are themed for.
I’d also really recommend digging further through the Warlord range – there are loads of possibilities for conversions and kit-bashing to create unique units to add character to your army. On the Eastern Front, there was a lot of kit-sharing and looting of enemy gear – I have, for example, had great fun combining the Soviet Winter Infantry sprues with German weapons to create some distinct squads…
